Driving Rankings 📈
Squarespace is brilliant at making a site look good and terrible at telling you why it isn't ranking. There's no plugin to install, no server to tune and a fixed set of settings - which means Squarespace SEO is less about what you can bolt on and more about using what's there properly, and working around what isn't. As a Squarespace SEO consultant, I focus on the decisions that move rankings on this platform: site structure and URL slugs, page-level targeting, the settings panel most owners never open, the speed problems that heavy templates cause, and the structured data and hreflang that Squarespace won't add for you. Practical, platform-specific work - not a generic checklist.

A Squarespace SEO Specialist Who Knows the Platform's Limits
Based in London and working with clients worldwide, I've spent 15+ years in SEO across every major CMS, and Squarespace is the one where honesty matters most. Half of what people search for - “Yoast for Squarespace”, “Squarespace SEO plugin” - doesn't exist, because the platform doesn't have a plugin ecosystem. What it does have is a solid technical baseline (automatic sitemap, SSL, canonicals, mobile-responsive templates) and a handful of decisions that owners get wrong: one-page sites trying to rank for everything, blog and shop URLs nobody planned, tag pages creating duplicates, and templates that look beautiful and load slowly.
A Squarespace SEO expert earns their fee by knowing which of those are worth fixing on your site and which aren't possible on the platform at all - so you spend your budget on rankings rather than on fighting the CMS. If you've been looking for a Squarespace SEO agency, the difference here is that one senior person does the audit, writes the changes and, in most cases, makes them directly in your site.

Squarespace SEO Services
You chose Squarespace because it lets you run a good-looking site without a developer. My Squarespace SEO services are built around the same principle: every recommendation is something you (or I) can actually implement in the Squarespace editor, in the right order, with a clear reason. The result is a site where the pages that bring enquiries are the pages Google finds first - and where the platform's constraints stop being an excuse.

SEO for Squarespace Websites
Is Squarespace good for SEO? Genuinely, yes - for the sites it was designed for. Service businesses, portfolios, restaurants, consultants and small shops can rank very well on Squarespace, because the technical baseline is sound and the platform can't be broken by a bad plugin. Where it struggles is scale and control: large catalogues, faceted navigation, complex international setups and anything that needs server-level changes are better served by WordPress or Shopify.
So SEO for a Squarespace website is about getting the fundamentals exactly right and being realistic about the ceiling. Most Squarespace sites I audit aren't held back by the platform - they're held back by never having planned pages around real searches, never opening the SEO settings, and uploading 4MB hero images. Fix those and the platform gets out of the way. The same thinking applies to the other builders I work with, Wix and Webflow, each with its own quirks.
Squarespace SEO FAQ
Is Squarespace good for SEO?
Yes, for the kind of sites it's built for: service businesses, portfolios, small shops and content sites. It handles the technical basics automatically - sitemap, SSL, canonicals, mobile - and can't be wrecked by a rogue plugin. It's a weaker fit for large catalogues, faceted navigation and complex international sites, where the lack of server-level control becomes a real limit.
Do I need an SEO plugin for Squarespace?
There isn't one - Squarespace has no plugin ecosystem, so “Yoast for Squarespace” doesn't exist. Everything is done through the built-in SEO settings, the page and image settings, URL mappings for redirects, and code injection for anything custom like structured data or hreflang. That's less to install and more to get right by hand.
Which Squarespace SEO settings matter most?
Page-level SEO titles and descriptions, sensible URL slugs, noindexing tag and category pages that duplicate your blog, alt text on images, and making sure your homepage isn't trying to rank for everything at once. The site-wide settings matter less than most guides suggest; the page-level decisions are where the rankings are.
Can Squarespace handle hreflang and international SEO?
Not natively. Squarespace doesn't add hreflang tags, so for multi-language or multi-country sites they have to be injected in the page header - and kept accurate as pages change. It's workable for a handful of markets; for anything larger, it's one of the reasons I'd point you towards a different platform. My international SEO page covers the full approach.
How much does Squarespace SEO cost?
Squarespace sites tend to be smaller, so the work is usually a fixed-fee audit and implementation project rather than a long engagement. Where ongoing work makes sense, my retainers start at £2,000 per month. I've published a full breakdown of UK pricing in how much does SEO cost.
